Importance of Temperature Monitoring in Battery Testing
Accurate temperature monitoring is a critical aspect of battery testing to ensure both safety and data integrity. One key application is the prevention of thermal runaway or overheating during test procedures. When a battery exceeds a predefined temperature threshold, the test must be safely halted to protect the battery and associated equipment.


In many cases—especially with larger batteries—temperature distribution is not uniform across the entire cell or pack. Relying on a single-point temperature measurement can lead to misleading data and increased safety risk, as it may not accurately reflect the thermal behavior of the entire battery. To address this, multi-point temperature sensing is highly recommended. This approach provides a more comprehensive thermal profile, enabling early detection of localized hotspots.

Example:
Provided that you have a battery tester (cycler), for example, LBT21084:

And an Auxiliary device, including auxiliary temperature channels:


we will assume that Channel 1 of the cycler is being used to charge the battery, and temperature measurements are required at three distinct points on the battery surface.

To set up the temperature measurement:

1 – Connect the Temperature Probes:
Insert three temperature probes into the Auxiliary Temperature Input Channels 1, 2, and 3 on the Arbin auxiliary chassis.

2 – Place the Probes on the Battery:
Secure each probe onto different areas of the battery where temperature monitoring is desired. This ensures that thermal variations across the battery surface are accurately captured.

3 – Configure in MITS software:

Open the MITS Pro software and associate the corresponding auxiliary channels with the test channel (Channel 1 in this case). Each probe input can be mapped to specific temperature measurement points and labeled accordingly for real-time tracking and data logging.
